The valve at the bottom of the basket probably has scale or other debris in there that is binding up the mechanism. I would suggest taking it apart. If it is scale, you can soak the parts in vinegar for a day. A Mr. Coffee won't have proper water distribution (some grounds will get more extracted than others, like pouring a bucket in the sand and some of it gets more wet), it probably won't get the water hot enough, the temperature and water flow rate likely won't be constant (something crucial when chasing a better cup), and the hot plate will burn ...
